Sønderskovs History and usage Sønderskov is originally from Denmark from Fejø It is also known under the synonyms Slibestensæble. Sønderskov is a seedling, formed 1850. Sønderskov has been known in Denmark since 1850. The variety is or has been grown to some extent in Denmark. Sønderskov is or has been suitable for growing in orchards/in gardens. The tree can also be used for ornamental purpose. The apple is a dessert/culinary apple. Sønderskov grows at the Pometum. The cultivar is also shown at: Gl. Estrup. The tree The tree has a moderate, spreading/drooping growth. The yield is medium/high. The cultivar is sensitive towards apple scab, robust towards apple mildew og very robust towards apple cancer. Sønderskov got in the period of 2006-2009 evaluated under unsprayed conditions. Sønderskov got scab attack on approx. half of the leaves, no scab attack on the apples, no fruit cancer on the branches, mildew attack on approx. 25% of the shoots, very few fruits with flyspeck/soothy blotch and no shoots with rosy apple aphid. The colour of the flower at the balloon stage is light pink, the blossom is early. The variety is diploid and has the following alleles of self-incompatibility 33/?. The quality and season of the apple The season of the apple is medium early, to enjoy from September/Oktober. Sønderskov is mature for harvesting middle to late (first part of Oktober). The apple has more than an average attractive appearance. The flesh is very juicy with a medium sweetness, medium acidity and much aroma. The overall flavour of Sønderskov is evaluated as very good. The apple stores for a long time. The external of the apple The apple is big with a length of 75 mm and a diameter of 84 mm, measured at maximum width. The shape is globose conical and very asymmetrical. The groundcolour of the apple is greenish yellow. The covercolour is pink. The covercolour covers approx. 25 % of the apple. It forms a a solid flush with strongly defined stripes/a weakly defined flush with strongly defined stripes. The surface of the skin is rough / hammered/russeted. There are only few/some lenticells. The lenticells are large. The colour of the lenticells appear greyish white in relation to the groundcolour and yellow in relation to the covercolour. The stalk is long and medium thick/thick, approx. 17 mm long and approx. 3,0 mm thick. The cavity is medium deep, with some russet. The basin is deep, and the eye is small and half open/open. The basin is a little ribbed. The internal of the apple When you cut the apple from eye to stalk, you can see the following characteristics: The tube is conical and the stamens are inserted at the base/in the middle of the eye. The green lines around the core end at the base of the tube, but don´t touch each other. The core is hearth shaped. If you cut the apple horizontally, the core will look closed. The diameter of the core is approx. 27mm. The core fill out approx. 0,31 of the cross cut of the whole apple. The pips are medium sized and brown. The skin is medium thick and the fruit flesh has a white colour. The flesh is medium firm with a 1 texture. The flesh has no tendency to browning when cut.
